A new job, a new car, and a Nascar race!

Filed under: Family Update — colie @ 3:17 am

Our days in Virginia can only be described as busy!  We feel like we have hit the ground running!  We’ve only been here a little over a week but it seems like several months…and that’s a good thing!  We arrived Friday morning August 31st at 9am.  We went to breakfast with the whole family and it was wonderful!  Shane had never been to Bob Evans and he really liked it.

Shane called one of his contacts about a job and they asked him to come in after the long weekend for an interview.  He went in Tuesday afternoon at 1 and they called an offered him the job at 6:30!  He will be working for a contractor called Smartronix on Quantico Marine Corps Base.  He will be working in their Network Operations Center doing work very similar to work he was doing at Hickam.  The money is great, the benefits are great, and the company seems awesome to work for.  He is thrilled about the job and the short commute!  He begins work on Monday, Sept. 10th.

Since Shane starts work a little sooner than planned we decided we needed to go car shopping.  We went out to Manassas to the Jeep dealership and fell in love with a 2008 4 door Jeep Wrangler Sahara.  It’s crimson (ROLL TIDE) and is beautiful!  We took a similar one for a test drive and loved it!  This jeep hadn’t even made it out on the lot yet…it was still wrapped in plastic!  We applied for our car loan online and 30 minutes later we were signing the paperwork!  They prepared the jeep for us and we picked it up last Friday.  It’s a beauty!

Saturday we drove to Richmond (in Dad’s car no way were we taking our new car!) to the race.  We arrived about Noon and tailgated for the afternoon.  It was pretty hot but luckily there was a nice breeze.  We ran into some friends Bobby, Justin, and Mark and had a great time hanging out with them.  We headed down to the track and checked out all the excitement.  We arrived just in time to see Daughtry preform!  Shane’s first race and his favorite band?!  Life doesn’t get much better than that!  We had foot long corn dogs and funnel cake for dinner…it was so yummy!  The race was awesome even though Elliott and Junior had a rough night.  We had a great time and will remember this race for a long time to come.

I’m not sure what will top our first few weeks in Virginia but I can’t wait to see what other excitement is right around the corner!!!

Moving Weekend

Filed under: Family Update — colie @ 3:52 pm

The time has finally come for us to pack up in the islands and prepare for our big move home.  The process of moving started on Thursday, Aug. 23 when the movers arrived bright and early to begin boxing up our house.  We had a crew of 3 really nice guys at the house.  Lexi was fascinated with all the commotion.  I can’t imagine what was going through her mind as she watched the guys pack up all her toys, her clothes, and even her bed!

The guys finished boxing up the house and loading the crates on Friday afternoon.  We checked into the Hale Koa in downtown Waikiki.  We were beat but happy to have that phase of the move finished.

Saturday we were up early to meet Uncle Jack and Aunt Angela for breakfast at Lulu’s.  We ate this awesome stuffed french toast.  It had a pineapple and cream cheese mixture in the middle and it was amazing!  We walked around Waikiki and went to the art and craft show in Kapolani Park.  It was so fun!

Saturday afternoon we headed back to the house to clean it up.  We did some last minute dusting, mopping, etc.  It wasn’t much fun but a neccessary evil.  haha  Uncle Jack and Aunt Angela kept Lexi occupied while we worked.

On our way back to the hotel for dinner we stopped for Sweet Chili Chicken at Kakkako Kitchen.  It was so good!  It is this fried chicken with teriyaki sauce with rice and mac salad.  It was my favorite lunch while I was a working girl!

We had lots of fun the rest of the week playing at the pool and resting a bit.  We were so happy to spend lots of time the last few days with Uncle Jack and Aunt Angela.  We hated saying all of our goodbyes but we leave with so many happy memories.

Our last full day in Hawaii was Wednesday August 29th.  Shane had his final out at the base and then had the rest of the afternoon free.  We enjoyed the pool and hanging out at the hotel.  We went to Duke’s in Waikiki for dinner.  It was so good.  The sunset was beautiful, the food was awesome, and the Hula Pie was out of this world!  Check out the website:  www.hulapie.com.  If you ever go to Waikiki, this is on your must see places to visit.

We woke up on Thursday very early.  I guess we had a lot on our minds.  It seemed surreal that it was time to leave.  Three years sounds like a long time but when you think about all of our experiences there, it seems like it went by really fast.

We left Honolulu at 4:15pm and arrived in DC the next morning on Friday, August 31st at 9am.  Lexi did awesome on the plane again.  We were so happy to be home and not have to take that long flight again for a while!

So, our three year honeymoon has ended.  It was an amazing adventure, one that I never thought I’d get to have.  Many people aren’t lucky enough to visit Hawaii yet we were blessed to live there for three years.  We will always be very attached to the islands because that is where Lexi was born.  We have made life long friends and have some many wonderful memories and pictures that we will treasure forever.  We only hope that the next phase of our life in Virginia will be so full of happiness and fun!

Update on posting pictures

Filed under: Uncategorized — colie @ 9:13 am

We are having problems posting pictures from our destop at home and my laptop is in Virginia. As soon as we get back and get settled I will be posting pictures from our vacation, our trip to Maui, and our final days in Honolulu.  Stay tuned!

Maui Weekend Aug 3-5

Filed under: Family Update — colie @ 9:12 am

Friday morning August 3 we left at 8am with Aunt Angela and Uncle Jack to spend the weekend in Maui.  That was the last island that we had not visited.  We arrived in Kahului after a quick 30 minute flight from Honolulu.  We picked up our rental car and drove to a great little diner for breakfast.  We had a good meal and then began our day.

Once we were done with breakfast we drove towards our resort when a craft fair and indoor flea market caught our eye.  We found some really beautiful jewerly and clothes.  It is always interesting to check out all the unique stuff that people are selling.

I was pushing Lexi in the stroller and we were waiting for the gang to look in one of the little shops when out of no where a little blonde boy named Owen came rushing up to Lexi and kissed her!  I don’t know who was more shocked me or his mom, but boy were we surprised!  He is 3 years old and she promised he had never done anything like that before…yeah right!  haha  He kissed her cheek and her hand and hugged her.  It was so cute, but daddy wasn’t quite as pleased.  We didn’t think we had to worry about boys for several years.  Boy were we mistaken!

Next we drove out to Lahaina.  We walked around Front Street and checked out the town.  We did a little shopping and enjoyed the sights.  We got to see the old banyan tree in downtown Lahaina that covers one city block.  The history of Lahaina is really interesting.  The Maui website says, “This fun-loving historic town was once the capital of the Hawaiian kingdom and the seat of power for the Kamehameha dynasty in the early nineteenth century. By the mid-1800s, with as many as 400 ships at a time berthed in the harbor, spilling up to 1,500 sailors ashore, Lahaina went on to become the lusty port of the Yankee whaling fleet. The whalers said there was no God west of the Horn, and they conducted themselves accordingly - until a band of puritanical missionaries arrived from New England to spoil the ribald party. The battles between the reverends and the revelers became legendary. Among the sailors was Herman Melville, who immortalized the era in his classic novel, Moby Dick.”

After Lahaina we drove to our resort in Kihei.  We passed a brush fire on the way.  That has been a big problem on all the islands this summer because it has been so dry.  We stayed at the Castle Kamaole Sands.  It was a wonderful place with one bedroom, two baths, a living room, and a full kitchen.

Kihei is known for sharing the sunniest, driest end of Maui with Wailea and Makena is the community of Kihei. The brilliant feature of this seaside town is its six-mile long stretch of sandy beach with views of Kaho‘olawe, Molokini, Lana’i and West Maui. From this vantage point, the West Maui Mountains appear to be a separate island, a mysterious Shangri La in the distance. Hawaiian royalty sojourned regularly at Kihei, basking regally on the breeze-swept shore. There’s nothing sleepy about this coast now, nor will it cost a king’s ransom to visit.

We went to dinner at this awesome place called Stella Blues Cafe.  The food was amazing.  My favorite was the Lilikoi (Passionfruit) Cheesecake.  It was beyond yummy!  Check out their website to see how good everything looks!  http://www.stellablues.com/

Saturday morning started wonderfully!  Aunt Angela made eggs with mushrooms and maui onions and sausage.  It was soooooo good!  We all pigged out and were ready to start our day.

Our first stop was the Maui Ocean Center.  It is an awesome indoor and outdoor aquarium.  There were tons of exhibits with coral, fish, sharks, sea horses, sea turtles, and more.  We put Lexi up on the bench and she was so excited when the sharks swam right in front of her.  She started hitting the glass.  The child has no fear!  We were in awe watching the beautiful and graceful sea turtles.  We could have sat there for hours watching them!  Check out their website, this place was amazing:  www.mauioceancenter.com.

We had a wonderful meal and then did a little shopping in their gift shop.  They had some really cool stuff.  We met an artist named Marc who was painting Hawaiian Name Prints.  They are really popular and just awesome to look at.  We asked him to paint Alexis so we could frame it for her new room.  It was so exciting to watch him paint.  Lexi had no idea what she was looking at but she thought the artist was cool!

We also hit the Hula Cookies store in Maui.  This is their only location. You walk in and are hit in the face with the most amazing cookie smells.  They had ice cream, cookies, and coffee.  This is a bit like I pictured heaven to be like!  We ordered some cookies and proceeded to eat them before we even got back to the car.  We bought some dough so we could take it home and enjoy them again!  They deliver nationwide so if you ever what a little bit of the islands delivered to your door, check them out at www.hulacookies.com

We went back to our hotel changed and hit the pool.  Lexi had so much fun swimming and goofing around with us.  She played so hard that she feel asleep laying on Aunt Angela.  It was so relaxing just hanging out in the hot tub and pool.  We hadn’t stopped since arriving on Maui so it was nice to slow down a bit.

We went to a nice dinner and stole I mean found these awesome little football pocket calendars.  We only took about 30 of them!  Ask Aunt Angela about it!  haha

Sunday morning we woke up early and headed to the Maui Dive Shop to rent snorkeling equipment.  We hit the beach in Wailea and took turns playing in the water with Lexi and snorkeling.  When Jack, Angela and Nicole were snorkeling we saw a huge 5 foot sea turtle!  It was the biggest turtle we had ever seen.  It scared me at first because it was so big but then we just sat back and watched and swam with him for a bit.  What a beautiful creature!  We had the underwater camera and as soon as we get the pictures developed, I will get them posted.

Our last stop on Maui was driving to the top of Haleakala Crater, the world’s largest dormant volcano.  Haleakala means “House of the Sun.”  I found this cool website that describes the cultural aspect of the crater.  Go to www.ifa.hawaii.edu/haleakala/cultural/ to read about it.

It is 3,000 feet deep and the circumference is 21 miles! The top of the crater is at 10,000 feet!  You can see Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island!  They have a live cratercam that you can see the view: http://koa.ifa.hawaii.edu/crater/.  The drive up the crater takes over an hour!  The climb is steep and the road is twisty.  The road is reputed for climbing the most altitude in the shortest distance.

Mark Twain had this to say when he watched the sunrise from Haleakala, ” I felt like the last man, neglected of the judgment, and left pinnacled in mid-heaven, a forgotten relic of a vanished world.” It was a breathtaking way to end an amazing weekend.

You’ve probably heard the saying “save the best for last” and that was true for us and Maui.  Our only regret is that we only visited the island once during our time here.  It was amazingly beautiful.  It had the best of both worlds - the old history and culture of Hawaii and the fun touristy stuff that everyone enjoys.  What a trip!

Yes, it’s been a crazy week here in Honolulu but we are happy to report all is well.

-The earthquake was on the Big Island in Hilo and was not strong enough for us to feel on Oahu.

-The hurricane fizzled out and was not a big deal to any of the islands.  We had stronger trade winds for the past two days and today was very cloudy and a little cooler.

-The brush fire is not close enough for us to feel the effects.  Over 5,000 acres are burning on the other side of the mountains.

-The tsunami alert was posted and within two hours was cancelled.  The earthquakes in Peru did not generate a tsunami.  Original reports put us on alert for 2am.  That has been reevaluated and all is well.

I guess mother nature is reminding us that the weather can be more than sunny, bright and beautiful here.  We have started our “going away tour” and it’s been sad.  Today was lunch with the girls that I worked with at GSA when we first moved here.  It was wonderful and sad all at the same time.  Tomorrow is lunch again with 2 friends from GSA.  Next week is Shane’s going away luncheon for work.  It’s hard to say goodbye but it helps to know that we are coming home to so many family and friends.

Vacation Part 2

Filed under: Family Update — colie @ 10:59 am

Today is Sunday, July 22 and we are back in Honolulu after our vacation.  The last 2 weeks proved to be just as busy as the first one!  We drove back from Savannah to the lake house on Monday, July 9th.  We wanted to be back to celebrate Pop Pop’s birthday on the 10th.  We had a great day together!  We did a little shopping and relaxing before the Bullock gang began to arrive on Friday, July 13th.

Uncle Mike, Aunt Di, Andrea, Richard, Liv, and Zeb came to visit on Friday.  We couldn’t believe how much the kids had grown!  Lexi had so much fun with Liv and Zeb (her little boyfriend).  We fished, went on a boat ride, played, and laughed.  It was so great spending time together!!

On Saturday, Mamaw, Papaw, Uncle Pat, Aunt Teri, Lindsay, Derrick, and Keri came to visit.  They were disappointed Lexi was asleep when they arrived but she was soon up playing with the group!  We went swimming on the lake and had a blast!  It had been a while since we all had been together.  It was so great!

After a yummy lunch the gang started hitting the road.  Our time together was short but full of fun.  We were so happy everyone was able to come and spend some time with us and meet our little star.  It was a great visit.

On Sunday we headed north to Woodbridge.  It was the first time Lexi was able to visit Mommy’s hometown and Grams and Pop Pop’s house!  Aunt Lillie, Jaime, Trinity and Kelsey came by to see us.  We had fun watching Trinity and Lexi play together since they are so close in age.

Sunday afternoon we had our walk thru on our new house and enjoyed our visit with the previous owners.  They were really nice.  We just loved the house.  It is beautiful and is going to be such a wonderful home for us.  Lexi crawled around and gave it her seal of approval too!  Uncle David and David J came by for a surprise visit.  It was cute to see them with Lexi.  She really liked David J.

We also went by and checked on our townhouse.  We are so sad that our renters are moving out.  They are great girls and we will miss them.  Luckily, we have found two new girls that will be moving in during mid Aug.  The house looks great!  It seems like a lifetime ago when I lived there!

Monday was our settlement day.  We became official homeowners again!  It was so exciting signing all the papers and getting handed the keys and garage door openers for our new home.  We were so thrilled!  We left the office, went home to change, and went right to the house and started working on moving a few things in and meeting neighbors!

Lexi started feeling bad Monday afternoon and came down with a little cold.  She had a really hard day on Tuesday.  Pop Pop and Shane worked on the yard at the new house and I hung out with Lexi.  She was nice enough to share her cold with Mommy and Grams.  We were feeling a little yuckie too so we decided to postpone the cookout for the VA gang.  We were sorry to do it but with her runny nose and teething we decided we would have a better time in Sept. when we are home for good.

Lexi felt a little better on Wednesday so we decided to go out to dinner and celebrate the house.  We went to the Steakhouse we had heard so much about and it lived up to its hype.  Dinner was awesome!  It was so cool sitting there together and then “Home” by Daughtry came on the radio and I had to smile to myself thinking about all the wonderful memories that we are going to make in VA.

The cold hit Grams and Mommy like a ton of bricks on Thursday.  We rested and took some cold medicine trying to feel better before leaving on Friday.  We got up nice and early on Friday and luckily I was feeling better…at least until we arrived at the airport.  We found out that our flight to Atlanta was cancelled.  We waited for almost two hours before we got booked on a new flight which would leave us in Richmond until Saturday.  Delta put us up in a hotel with meal vouchers and gave us an airline credit for our trouble.

Pop Pop packed us back up in the van again and took us over to our hotel.  We stayed in a nice place.  We all had lunch together and Pop Pop hit the road.  We did some shopping and hung out at the hotel for the afternoon.  We had a drink at the bar and played Ms. Pac Man which I stink at but Shane did great!

While stuck in Richmond, we got a very happy phone call from Shane’s childhood friend Scott Pate that his wife Holley had given birth to their first child a few days early!  Ella Joy was welcomed into the world early Friday morning.  Mom and daughter are both fine and will be going home in a few days.  We were so happy for them!  We hope to go visit them in Alabama one day soon.

Saturday morning was an even earlier day for us.  We were up at 5:30am to catch our 8am flight.  We flew to Minneapolis then to San Francisco then to Honolulu.  It was a VERY LONG day but Lexi did great again.  She didn’t cry one time and several people told us she should get an award for the best airline passenger!  :)

It was a wonderful, wonderful trip.  Now we are on a 39 day “vacation” in Honolulu to prepare for our big move home.  We leave Hawaii on Aug. 30 and will arrive at Dulles on Aug. 31.  It’s a very exciting time in our lives!  I am now going to work on posting some pictures.  I took over 800 pictures so give me a few days to get a few posted online.  Thanks for reading this chronicle of our trip, I had such a good time writing it!

Stay tuned for more tales of the travels of the McGee family….

Vacation Part 1

Filed under: Family Update — colie @ 2:10 pm

Today is Sunday, July 8th and we are over a week into our vacation.  We arrived in Richmond, VA on Thursday, June 28th, which was Lexi’s 7 month birthday.  The flight went really well.  It was 8 1/2 hours to Atlanta and 1 1/12 hours to Richmond.  Lexi cried one time when an older man gave her a grumpy look.  She slept a lot of the plane and flirted with all the passengers.  She was such a good girl!

We drove to the lake house in Henrico, NC (about 2 hours away) and spent our first days there.  It didn’t take us long to acclimate to the time change.  Lexi did really well!  Grams, Pop Pop, and Great Granny had such a good time with their girl.  It was wonderful being together.  Lexi really liked being out on the boat and riding up and down the lake.  It put her to sleep and relaxed us all.  It was fun to watch her reactions to seeing fish in the lake and checking out a new environment.

On Monday, July 2nd Floozie and Uncle Francis joined us at the lake house.  They were very excited to meet their “grand” niece.  We all celebrated Shane’s 29th birthday on Tuesday, July 3rd.  We had a wonderful breakfast and decided to head into Emporia.  Yes, Emporia the home of Colie’s favorite NASCAR racer Elliott Sadler.  We went to lunch at Cracker Barrel which was awesome.  The best part was the Sweet Iced Tea!

We went to the Sadler Fan Club Headquarters and took a bunch of pictures.  It was a really neat experience.  We all just enjoyed being together!  We had a wonderful steak dinner with fresh corn and Shane’s favorite German Chocolate Cake for dessert.  This was the first time Colie had made it (luckily with Gran’s help) and it got rave reviews!

July 4th was a fun day.  We did some running around and some shopping during the day.  We had a nice dinner and then went out on the boat.  We relaxed on the deck and watched the fireworks over the lake.  It was a great day!

5:15am came really early the next morning!  That is when we left for our 6 1/2 hour drive to Savannah, GA.  It was an easy drive south on 95.  Lexi slept over half way so we enjoyed the scenery.  We arrived shortly after lunchtime.  It was great to see Shane’s parents!  They have a beautiful home just outside the city.

Thursday night Shane’s brother Shawn, his wife Rebecca, and their sons Skylar and Austin came over and we ordered pizza and had a yummy Butter Pecan cake Rebecca made.  Lexi enjoyed meeting her cousins.  Skylar is 2 and Austin is 10 1/2 months old.  Austin and Lexi were really cute together.  They are both really smiley and laugh a lot.  They got along great!

Friday was a very cool day.  We got up early and drove downtown to put our names on the list to have lunch at Lady and Sons or Paula Deen’s place.  We waited about a half hour to put our names on the list and we just slid in with a 2:45 reservation (they close at 3).

We had a wonderful breakfast in the City Market and then took a Trolley tour through downtown.  The tour was so cool!  It went by every famous landmark in Savannah.  Much of the tour talked about “The Book” (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil…if you haven’t read it you should!) and all the landmarks from the book.  It was so awesome!  I wore my fingers out clicking pictures throughout the town!

The main feature was lunch at Paula’s.  The place is awesome!  I thought it really lived up to all the hype.  We had the lunch buffet which featured fried chicken, fried fish, collard greens, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, butter beans, etc.  I think there was a salad bar in the corner but we didn’t make it over there.  haha  For dessert the choices were Peach Cobbler (mine and Nana’s choice), Banana Pudding (PaPa’s choice) and Pound Cake with cream cheese frosting (Shane’s choice).  I can honestly say those were some of the best desserts I have ever tasted.  We were blown away and not to mention stuffed to the gill!

Saturday we had breakfast at home and then we headed over to Uncle Shawn and Aunt Rebecca’s house.  The kids played and we spent some time together.  It was fun!  Sat. afternoon we went over to the local mall and did some shopping.  Lexi slept through her first thunderstorm which included the lights going off in the mall while we were in line at Bath and Body Works!  It was so funny!  Luckily they came back on quickly because we didn’t want to miss out on the goodies on the annual sale!!

Saturday night we went to dinner at Nana and PaPa’s favorite Mexican place.  The food was yummy!  We headed over to the Richmond Hills City Hall to watch the fireworks.  Lexi did not like them at all!  Lexi and Mommy sat in the car with the radio on so she couldn’t hear all the noise.  She looked at the lights a little but was not very impressed by them.  Oh well, maybe next year.

Sunday we went to brunch with the whole family and then said goodbye to Shawn, Rebecca, and the boys.  The rest of us headed over to Tybee Island to see the beach and the lighthouse.  It was beautiful!  We got to see a fisherman catch a small shark!  It was wild!  The lighthouse is the 3rd oldest in the US and really pretty.  We had dinner at this cool place called the Crab Shack, where they have live alligators living in front of the place.  It was freaky!

On Monday morning we will head down to River Street do some shopping and grab lunch before hitting the road back to the lake house in NC.  Stay tuned for highlights from the rest of our trip.  We head back to the islands on 7/20……………………

Memorial Day weekend 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — colie @ 8:11 am

We had a fun holiday weekend.  Shane was off Friday until Monday which was awesome!  Friday night we went to a party at Jack and Angela’s house.  It was a welcome home party.  The gang was all there and the kids had a ball playing together.  The food was terrific as always!  Saturday we went out to lunch and did a little running around.  Sunday we watched the race and then had a picnic at a park on base.  It was right on the water and we watched the sunset.  We were near the Officer’s club and they had a Hawaiian band playing so we just relaxed and listened to the music.  On Monday we went to the North Shore and went to the beach.  Lexi loved the sand and water.  We went to lunch and saw the actor that plays Lex Luther on Smallville.  Then we went over to the Marine Corps base and hung out for a while.  They were having a big Memorial Day sale.  After that we picked up my new camera.  I love it…it’s pink!  It’s a Sony Cybershot.  I just love it!  It was a wonderful weekend just relaxing together.  It was our last holiday in Hawaii!
